Ponferrada

Ponferrada is an essential city for understanding the identity of El Bierzo. Set in a strategic location, shaped by the Way of St James and surrounded by some of the region’s most representative landscapes, it combines history, heritage, urban life and a strong personality of its own.

Its great symbol is the Castle of the Templars, one of the most remarkable medieval fortresses in north-western Spain. Its silhouette dominates the old town and recalls the importance the city once had in defending the territory and protecting pilgrims. Walking through its walls, towers and courtyards offers a journey through centuries of history and the chance to discover one of the most visited heritage sites in El Bierzo.

At the foot of the castle lies the historic quarter, a network of streets and squares that preserves the city’s traditional atmosphere. The Town Hall Square, the Church of San Andrés, the Clock Tower and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Encina form part of an urban route full of historical, religious and cultural references. Each corner helps visitors understand the evolution of Ponferrada, from its medieval past to its present role as the capital of El Bierzo.

The city also maintains a close relationship with the Way of St James. Pilgrims arriving in Ponferrada find a place to rest, access services and enjoy its heritage, but also a lively city with shops, museums, cultural spaces and a gastronomic offering closely linked to the local territory.

Ponferrada is also an excellent starting point for discovering other places in El Bierzo. From here, visitors can easily reach sites such as Las Médulas, Molinaseca, Compludo, Peñalba de Santiago, Cacabelos, Carracedo del Monasterio and Villafranca del Bierzo. This location makes it an ideal base for organising cultural, natural and gastronomic routes throughout the region.

The visit is completed by Bierzo cuisine and the quality local products of the area: botillo, roasted peppers, chestnuts, fruit, empanada and wines from the D.O. Bierzo are all part of an experience that goes beyond heritage. Ponferrada is enjoyed through its monuments, but also through its streets, its flavours and its unhurried way of discovering a city full of history.

For all these reasons, Ponferrada is much more than a stop on the Way. It is a monumental, welcoming and strategically located city, perfect for beginning a journey through El Bierzo and discovering a land where the medieval past, the Jacobean tradition, gastronomy and landscape come together naturally.
