Railway Museum

The Ponferrada Railway Museum is one of the most outstanding cultural and historical gems of El Bierzo and a must-visit for those wishing to explore the region’s industrial and mining heritage. Located in the former locomotive depot of the Ponferrada-Villablino (PV) railway line, this museum offers a journey into the past through railway development linked to coal extraction and the economic growth of the area.

The museum is set in a place full of history and nostalgia, where steam locomotives, vintage wagons, and machinery from the daily life of the most important mining railway in northwest Spain are still preserved. The exhibition combines original elements, historical photographs, technical objects, and audiovisuals that help contextualize the importance of the train in the economic and social life of El Bierzo during the 20th century.

One of the main attractions of the museum is the collection of steam locomotives in perfect condition, some of which are located on the original turntable, a unique space that allows visitors to observe these impressive machines from different angles. In addition, the old engine shed has been restored to host temporary exhibitions and educational activities.

The route is suitable for both adults and children, making it an ideal plan for families. Throughout the year, guided tours, school workshops, thematic events, and community activities are organized.

The Ponferrada Railway Museum is located very close to the city center, making it easy to combine a visit with other points of interest such as the Castle of the Templars or the Radio Museum. Its surroundings, next to the Sil river promenade, also invite a pleasant outdoor walk.

Visiting the Ponferrada Railway Museum is immersing yourself in the living history of the region, reliving the golden age of steam, and discovering how the train transformed El Bierzo.
